dada tata

I don’t have a lot of memories of dada-tata(dada-tata literally means brother-grandfather). dada-tata was my paternal grandfather’s brother. The earliest memory that I have of him is when he was old but still very fit. He was thin and tall and bearded and fair. The post is not about any of that. The post is about a small act that immortalized him in my memories.
As kids, my brother and I were very curious about him and his things - something was different about him from the rest of the adults that we knew at that age.

Baba often jokes with kids “I am going to take a shower and I will use all the available water. There won’t be any water left for you to shower” or “I just had a shower and I used all the available water. No water for you."(“ನಾ ಸ್ನಾನಕ್ಕ್ ಹೊಂಟೀನಿ. ನೀರು ಖಲಾಸ್ ಮಾಡ್ತೀನಿ. ನಿನಗ್ ನೀರ್ ಇಡಂಗಿಲ್ಲ” or “ನಾ ಸ್ನಾನಾ ಮಾಡಿ ಬಂದೆ. ನಿನಗ್ ನೀರೇ ಉಳಸಿಲ್ಲ”).
In Gulbarga, while growing up, potable water shortage was a constant problem.

Predictable way of going away

Life is predictable in an unpredictable way. I was asked this morning, in my dreams, whether I want to die crying alone or crying in the middle of people I know. When I woke up, in addition to being sad, I was thinking how my death would be if it was not an accident. My body will be tired from age or from a disease. That doesn’t worry me as much.

Music player

This is sort of requirement doc.
Indian music is different compared to what english/western music is. Not just the music but the meta about music and music industry is equally interesting. Commercial music is primarily movie centric. Music that does not belong to movies(OST) is often called as non-filmi or private album or even just an album.
Information, the data that usually goes into tag like id3, about Indian music is very different as well.

Self-hosting me

I self-host this domain. Behind this website is a small pizza box server running a linux distro in a vm. Setting it up was straightforward and this post is a note to myself and others. List of quirks that I faced while setting up:
Turns out that iDRAC6 does not work as expected with Ubuntu’s default OpenJDK version 11. The keystrokes don’t go all the way to the console. Icedtea throws errors when started through a terminal.
