dada tata

I don’t have a lot of memories of dada-tata(dada-tata literally means brother-grandfather). dada-tata was my paternal grandfather’s brother. The earliest memory that I have of him is when he was old but still very fit. He was thin and tall and bearded and fair. The post is not about any of that. The post is about a small act that immortalized him in my memories.

As kids, my brother and I were very curious about him and his things - something was different about him from the rest of the adults that we knew at that age. Our curiosity was stronger because he never really engaged us - except one fine evening. I don’t remember the events leading up to the evening but what I remember is - that evening he took us to the supermarket area in Gulbarga. He showed us a few stores around and we walked a bit. Later he took us to a restaurant where all three of us ate ice cream. Before returning home, he took us to a paan shop and bought us a sweet paan.

That’s about it. I don’t remember anything else about the day.

30+ years ago, dada-tata immortalized himself, unintentionally, by making a kid very happy.
